Cavite province hosted the 1st Regional Children’s Month Celebration in CaLaBaRZon held at the Development Academy of the Philippines, Tagaytay City on November 24, 2017. The event initiated by the Regional Sub Committee for the Welfare of Children (RSCWC) and chaired by the Provincial Government through the Provincial Council for the Protection of Children (PCPC) was a huge success.
Ms. Elma Patawe, Tagaytay City Social Welfare Development Officer welcomed all the guests and participants on behalf of the City Mayor Agnes Tolentino. Likewise, Board Member Reinalyne Varias, Sangguniang Panlalawigan Chair of the Committee on Women, Children, Family and Social Services gave a short message on behalf of Governor Boying Remulla.
Children’s month celebration is being done to commemorate the Philippines’ adoption of the United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child. Mr. Jacob Taguinod, Regional Coordinator of the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) explained the story behind this year’s theme, “Bata: Iligtas sa Droga”. He said the role of the Councils for the Welfare of Children is to look into the welfare of the child saying that every child has to be protected, has the right of provision and the right for participation. Due to the recent increase in the number of children falling victims of illegal drug trade and other forms of violence in the country, PCI Averil Pimo-on, PNP IV-A led the a discussion on Drug Abuse Awareness to somehow help the children protect themselves.
Part of the Regional Children’s Month celebration was a Poster-making Contest based on this year’s theme. Group sessions were also held at 4 different venues/conference rooms wherein the children learned about the Children’s Rights discussed by Mr. Roldan Perey, UNCRC; Child Labor by Ms. Myrose Basila, DOLE; Online Child Pornography discussed by Ms. Amanda Lee, DSWD; and Child Protection in Emergencies by Ms. Fariza Bariaga from Open Heart Foundation. The PNP Band with their mascot also graced the occasion with their interactive performance with the kids. The celebration concluded with the awarding the winners in the Poster Making Contest coming from the Province of Rizal for 10-14 years old category and Laguna for the 15-17 years old group.
A total of 469 children from the provinces of CaLaBaRZon participated in the event. The celebration was also attended by Mr. Ricky A. Bunao, Head, Sectoral Concerns Unit, DSWD, Mr. Johnald Lasin, SOS Childdren’s Village Director and RSCWC Vice-chair, Mr. Alvin Mojica, PSWDO Consultant, Ms. Rosalinda Perez, Executive Director of Open Heart Foundation, members of the PNP, PCPC members, RSCWC and PSWDO Staff, teachers and Provincial Department Heads, Teatro Baile de Cavite and Children from SOS Children’s Village who did the intermission numbers. Also present to give support were Board Members Teofilo Lara, Ivee Jane Reyes, Kerby Salazar, and Rainier Ambion.
