Bacoor’s Annual Marching Band Competition Goes International

What started as a local marching band contest launched in 2011 had levelled-up and gone international last June 22-24, 2018, where 11 bands from neighboring Asian countries and 22 local entries from all over the Philippines competed in the 3-day Bacoor International Music Championships 2018 (BIMC 2018).

The City of Bacoor, dubbed as “The Marching Band Capital of the Philippines,” partnered with Winter Guard International (WGI) and the Asian Marching Band Confederation (AMBC) for the first-ever international musical band competition. This also formed part of the celebration of the 6th year cityhood anniversary of Bacoor.

Thousands of people gathered for the kick-off parade on June 22 as the 33 bands marched their way to Quirino Grandstand in Manila. Cavite Governor Boying Remulla graced the opening program and said that this kind of event is an opportunity for the Filipinos to showcase their love for music and to prove that Filipinos are indeed the best entertainers in the world. He further congratulated the City Government of Bacoor, headed by Mayor Lani Revilla, and the rest of the organizers for spearheading this exciting event.

Mayor Revilla later declared that “the local government of Bacoor is more than proud to host the first-ever WGI Philippines as it promises a new level of cultural awareness and an appreciation for the arts for our young Filipinos.”

The competitions went around the WGI three divisions of color guard, percussion ensembles and wind groups, plus AMBC’s Marching Show Band, Street Parade, Drumline Battle and Brassline Battle held in different venues in the cities of Bacoor, Pasay, and Manila. During the awarding ceremonies on June 24, overall champions were proclaimed—Sinag Color Guards-SICOGU for WGI Local, Jember Marching Band and Taipei Yuehfe Drum and Bugle Corps for WGI International, and Citizens’ Brigade Band of Dasmarinas for Marching Show Band and Street Parade.

BIMC 2018 definitely proved to be not only a perfect venue for showcasing what we have grown to know to be just as a local tradition during our town fiestas but also a ground for us to witness the marching band cultures of other countries.

As a culminating activity, the international contingents were treated for a tour at Museo ni Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite on June 25, 2018 through the efforts of the Cavite Provincial Tourism Office and the City Tourism Office of Bacoor.
