The Provincial Government of Cavite thru the Provincial Nutrition Council in partnership with the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) conducted the Culminating Activity of the 44th Nutrition Month with the theme “Ugaliing magtanim, Wastong nutrisyon aanihin!” at the Ceremonial Hall of the Provincial Capitol Building in Trece Martires City.
More than 200 participants from different cities and municipalities joined in the celebration which aims to intensify the quality of food intake by increasing the number of households, schools and communities who are practicing food gardening or backyard farming. It also aims to improve the healthy food consumption of the Filipinos by providing awareness on the benefits of eating nutritious foods.
On behalf of Governor Boying Remulla, Mr. Rocel Vince Bae acknowledged the participants for coming and encouraged them to consume nutritious foods. He also voiced out the importance of involving oneself in active lifestyles and engage in sports activities and exercises which can strengthen the body and mind. On the other hand, Ms. Angeles Peñalba, Provincial Nutritionist shared some insights on food gardening and its benefits. She also cited some common reasons why people are prevented from engaging in backyard farming. Meanwhile, Ms Irish E. Baguilat, Program Manager of IIRR discussed “Home Gardening” and inspired everyone to plant local fruits and vegetables that are easy to grow and require less care but produces more fruits.
Showcased in the nutrition month celebration were NUtri-Agri Fair, photo exhibits,and Nutrition Forum . The highlight of the celebration was the recognition and awarding ceremonies of the municipalities and cities who excelled in nutrition programs for their locality. High 2018 Operation Timbang Plus (OPT Plus) Coverage were awarded to the municipalities of Amadeo, GMA, Indang, Maragondon, Mendez, Naic, Silang, Tanza, Ternate and cities of Cavite and General Trias. The Outstanding Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) Implementor were granted to Alfonso, City of General Trias, Rosario and Carmona. Meanwhile, the 2017 Provincial Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar was bagged by Mylene D. San Juan of Barangay Puting Kahoy, Silang while Barangay Cabilang Baybay in the municipality of Carmona won the 2017 Provincial Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Committee. Over-all, the Municipality of Tanza earned the 2017 Provincial Most Outstanding Municipality.
The celebration was attended by Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (MNAO), Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), representatives from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Department of Education (DepEd), provincial government employees and other stakeholders. Mr. Jesus Barrera, Provincial Planning Development Officer, Ms. Lolita C. Pereña, Provincial Agriculturist and Tanza Councilor Icel Del Rosario-Morales were also present to support the event.
