Feast of Santo Niño de Ternate

A cultured unspoiled as early as 1663, in the town of Ternate—where Merdica families of Malay descent, first inhabited its famed sand bars and fished its inviting mineral waters, the feast of Santo Niño de Ternate on January 6 is one of the oldest known devotions of Filipinos to the Holy Child Jesus.

In preparation for tzhe upcoming feast, the ceremonial Baña de Santo Niño de Ternate (The Bathing of the Holy Child Jesus of Ternate) followed by Atavio de Santo Niño de Ternate (The Ritual Robing of the Holy Child Jesus of Ternate), is observed every 31st of December. It is said to believe that the water used to bathe the Holy Child Jesus, placed in bottles and distributed to visitors, can cure illnesses.
