The international community observes July 11 as World Population Day, a day to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. This year, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) celebrates World Population Day with the theme “Family Planning is a Human Right.”
This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the 1968 International Conference on Human Rights, where family planning was, for the first time, globally affirmed to be a human right. The Teheran Proclamation states, “Parents have a basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children.”
The Commission on Population is the country’s leading agency that implements Family Planning Program. POPCOM Executive Director Juan Antonio A. Perez III said, “We recognize that access to Family Planning (FP) information and services is a right that everyone is entitled to and we must work together so that nobody will be left behind. Investing in FP is investing in the health and rights of women and couples worldwide for them to be empowered and eventually achieve a better quality of life. FP is not just about access to contraceptives but also a human development as we empower them to make their choices.”
Dr. Perez III also stressed that the government is determined to respect, promote and ultimately fulfill the promise of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health (RPRH) law, that is, to provide universal access to family planning information and services for all women and couples.
To localize that said thrust of POPCOM, Cavite Provincial Population Office, headed by Ms. Lorena R. Cron, conducts series of lectures on Responsible Parenting and Family Planning (RP-FP). From January to June 2018, POPCOM Cavite conducted 194 sessions of RP-FP Seminar that was attended by 3,802 women of reproductive ages (WRA). The said seminars also gave emphasis on one-on-one counseling from WRAs to use modern Family Planning method. From January to June 14, 2018, PPO Cavite recorded a total of 1,597 WRAs given with modern FP method by both government and non government organization service providers. Among these, 1,221 uses implants, 184 uses DMPAs, 139 uses Contraceptives Pills, 20 uses IUDs and 33 were provided condoms for their husbands.
Tragically, reliable family planning methods are out of reach for hundreds of millions of people around the world. Many resort to unsafe, unreliable methods, some of which can be dangerous. PPO Cavite doubled its effort to reach out Caviteños to use modern FP methods to ensure their safety and well-being.
Women of reproductive ages are women who are capable of conception from 15 to 49 years old.
